The weight of painful memories

There is almost more weight on his shoulders than he can carry. The weight of the friends left behind, of the relationships that didn’t work out. The weight of the mistakes he made, the people he hurt, the chances he recognized but didn’t take. The weight of all the apologies he should have said, but never did. The weight of all the loose ends, the open wounds, the unfinished business. The weight of all the times he gave up and the times he should have given up, but didn’t. The weight of all the things left unsaid and of all the words he spoke, but should have kept inside. The weight of all the things he ruined, on purpose and by accident. The weight of painful memories, abandoned dreams and lost hopes. The weight of disillusion and unfulfilled potential. He walks like the weight is literally pushing down on him, his shoulders bent forward, his back crooked. He walks slowly. He walks like every step could be the last step he ever takes. Will you let it destroy you, stranger?
